Ingredients

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 to 3 pieces ripe bananas The riper, the better—look for bananas with plenty of brown spots.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted Creates a rich base for the bread.
  • 1 large egg, beaten Brings everything together.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Adds aromatic depth.

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda For leavening.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt To elevate flavors.
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder Gives the banana bread its chocolate flavor.
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips For pockets of melted chocolate.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a mixing bowl, mash the ripe bananas until smooth with a few small chunks left for texture.
  • Add the melted butter to the bananas and mix them together thoroughly.
  • Sprinkle the baking soda and salt over the banana mixture and stir to combine.
  • Add the granulated sugar, beaten egg, and vanilla extract, mixing until well blended without overmixing.
  • Fold in the flour and cocoa powder until just combined, avoiding any visible dry flour.
  • Gently fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips until evenly distributed.

Baking

  • Grease a loaf pan generously to prevent sticking.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
  • Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Ensure bananas are thoroughly ripe for flavor. Don't overmix the batter to keep the bread light and fluffy. Add nuts or swirl in peanut butter for variations. Can be frozen for up to three months.
