Main ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef Use 80/20 for juiciness.
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced Adds sweetness when sautéed.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil For sautéing onions.
  • 4 pieces hoagie rolls Soft but sturdy enough for filling.
  • 8 slices provolone cheese Melts beautifully over beef.
  • to taste salt and pepper Enhances overall flavor.

Preparation

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat and add olive oil. Once shimmering, add sliced onions.
  • Sauté until soft and translucent, stirring occasionally until golden brown.

Cooking

  • Add the ground beef to the skillet, increase heat to medium-high, and break apart the meat with a spatula.
  • Cook until the beef is browned and reaches an internal temperature of 160°F. Season with salt and pepper.

Assembly

  • Split hoagie rolls down the center without cutting all the way through and optionally toast the insides.
  • Divide the beef and onion mixture among the rolls and layer provolone cheese on top.
  • Place under the broiler for a few minutes until the cheese melts and bubbles.

Notes

Use high-fat ground beef for juiciness. Experiment with cheeses and toppings like roasted peppers or jalapeños. Serve hot for best flavor.
