Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
  • Cream together the unsalted butter and granulated sugar until fluffy, then gradually add the eggs one at a time.
  • Stir in the vanilla extract.

Mixing

  • Alternate adding the dry flour mixture and the milk to the butter-sugar mixture, mixing gently.
  • Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.

Baking

  • Bake for about 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Custard Preparation

  • Heat two cups of whole milk in a saucepan over medium heat.
  • Whisk together the granulated sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks until smooth.
  • Gradually whisk warm milk into the egg mixture, then return to the saucepan.
  • Cook while stirring until the custard thickens, then stir in butter and vanilla extract.

Assembly

  • Once cakes have cooled, slice each layer horizontally to create four thin layers.
  • Layer the custard and diced strawberries between cake layers, finishing with a layer of custard on top.
  • Garnish with whipped cream and halved strawberries.
